Preparations are underway for CU Boulder's 150th anniversary celebration in 2026, a milestone that will honor CU Boulder's legacy, engage the Boulder campus and broader communities and help set the stage as CU Boulder looks toward the future.

A dedicated 150th steering committee has been working behind the scenes since 2024 to shape a yearlong celebration that will complement the state of Colorado's 150th anniversary celebrations and the 250th anniversary of the U.S. Declaration of Independence.

"150 years ago, CU Boulder's founders dreamed of a university that would transform lives and strengthen society," said Chancellor Justin Schwartz. "If they could see the university today, I think they would be awestruck by the influence and impact this campus holds for students, staff and faculty, alumni and all of Colorado. It is an honor to celebrate our beginnings and our history and write the next great chapter in the CU Boulder story together."

This webpage will serve as a central hub for students, faculty, staff, alumni, donors, families and community members to learn more about CU Boulder's 150th plans—including events, storytelling initiatives, service projects and opportunities to participate in both campus and statewide celebrations.

What to expect

A calendar of events and engagement opportunities beginning in early 2026.
A yearlong series of storytelling initiatives and historical exhibits that:
- Celebrate CU Boulder's legacy across eras.
- Center missing histories and voices and narratives that need to be corrected or differently told.
- Connect CU Boulder to the histories of Boulder, Colorado, the United States and the world.
- Inspire participation in CU Boulder's vision for the future.
Cross-promotion and collaborations with the state of Colorado's 250/150 commission.

Last week, CU Boulder celebrated and honored faculty members who have earned tenure, been promoted to full professor or teaching professor, and received the Provost’s Faculty Achievement Award—one of the campus’s highest faculty honors. Together, these recognitions highlight the impact of faculty research and creative work, as well as the campus’s ongoing commitment to faculty success.

The recognition ceremony, held on Sep. 13 at the Center for British & Irish Studies, opened with remarks from Chancellor Justin Schwartz, who welcomed attendees and emphasized the campus’s priorities of supporting faculty success and excellence in research and creative work. Schwartz also highlighted the role of faculty as champions of student success, noting that the recent record retention and graduation rates are a credit to both major scholarly contributions and the many small, often unseen acts of excellence that add up to make a lasting impact.

“Faculty excellence is at the heart of our mission,” said Provost Ann Stevens, who led the ceremony. “These recognitions reflect the extraordinary contributions our faculty make in their fields, in the classroom and in the communities we serve. Their work inspires our students and strengthens CU Boulder’s role as a leader in innovation and discovery.”

The Provost’s Faculty Achievement Award honors faculty whose research or creative work demonstrates significant influence in their disciplines and beyond. This year’s honorees represent a wide range of fields but share a common thread—their work addresses important challenges, advances knowledge and opens new opportunities for creative expression.

Faculty members earning tenure and promotion this year also deserve special recognition. These milestones mark years of dedication to teaching, research and service, and they represent an important investment in the long-term success of CU Boulder.

“These achievements are not only about individual success,” added Stevens. “They reflect the collective strength of our academic community and our shared commitment to advancing knowledge, supporting creativity, and building an environment where faculty and students thrive.”

Below is a list of this year’s awardees.

Provost’s Faculty Achievement Awards

Tenure-track faculty

Kalonji Nzinga (Education) has been granted this award for his groundbreaking article, “Why Errybody Sayin ’No New Friends’?: The Proverbs of Rap and Why Young People Recite Them,” published in 2023 in the top journal, Cognition and Instruction.

Jihye Park (Chemistry) has been granted this award for her pathbreaking article, “Photocatalytic Hydrogen Peroxide Production through Functionalized Semiconductive Metal-Organic Frameworks,” which was published in 2024 in the Journal of the American Chemical Society, a high-impact journal in her field.

Nicholas Reinholtz (Business) has been granted this award for his high-impact 2021 article, “Do People Understand the Benefit of Diversification?”, published in Management Science, a top-tier journal in his field.

Tenured faculty

Joëlle Cruz (Communication) has been granted this award for her award-winning article, “Invisibility and Visibility in Alternative Organizing: A Communicative and Cultural Model,” published in 2017 in Management Communication Quarterly, one of the field’s top journals.

Henry Lovejoy (History) has been granted this award for his 2024 article, “Conceptualizing ‘Liberated Africans’ and Slave Trace Abolition: Government Schemes to Indenture Enslaved People Captured from Slavery, 1800–1920,” which was published in the top journal Past and Present and showcases a significant contribution to public digital humanities.

Orit Peleg (Computer Science) has been granted this award for her transformative body of work on collective computation in nature, which reveals how social insects are able to synchronize, solve complex problems and build structures as a team, without central planning or sophisticated communication.

Ross Taylor (Journalism) has been granted this award for his moving documentary film, “The Hardest Day,” which earned viral media coverage, as well as 12 awards from juried film festivals.

Marina Vance (Mechanical Engineering) has been granted this award for her impactful body of research on the formation, transport and fate of airborne contaminants known as aerosols, using methods such as controlled laboratory experiments and field studies in real environments.

The Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching and the American Council on Education (ACE) have announced that CU Boulder has been chosen to serve as the administrative and operational host for the new Carnegie Elective Classification for Sustainability.

The Carnegie Elective Classification for Sustainability recognizes and celebrates higher education institutions that demonstrate a commitment to sustainability and climate action as integral to their academic missions.

“We want to help every community enjoy access to clean air, fresh water, abundant food and a vibrant natural environment—the necessities for building a happy, healthy life,” said CU Boulder Chancellor Justin Schwartz. “Our motivation to host the new elective classification is to partner with a broad array of educational institutions to center sustainability in our missions, closely engage the publics we serve, and support practical solutions for communities near and far to achieve environmental resilience and a sustainable future.”

CU Boulder Vice Chancellor for Sustainability Andrew Mayock celebrated the announcement during his keynote address at the Green Schools Conference at Cornell University ILR School’s New York City conference center as part of New York City Climate Week events.

“We are grateful that Carnegie and ACE have entrusted CU Boulder with this critical leadership role, and we are excited to get to work with the initial cohort of colleges and universities participating in the pilot program,” said Mayock, who previously served as the U.S. government’s chief sustainability officer. “This selection places CU Boulder at the center of a rigorous new framework for assessing and advancing sustainability efforts in curriculum, research, operations and community engagement.”

The Carnegie Classification of Institutions of Higher Education is the nation’s leading framework for categorizing diverse U.S. higher education institutions. The Carnegie Elective Classification for Sustainability will be the third such elective classification offered by Carnegie, the first two being for Community Engagement and Leadership for Public Purpose.

“CU Boulder undertakes world-class sustainability research and is dedicated to ensuring their students are exceptional stewards of our planet, no matter the professional path they choose,” said Timothy F.C. Knowles, president of the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching. “Carnegie is thrilled to partner with CU Boulder and ACE to recognize colleges and universities for their essential contributions to global sustainability.”

A cohort of 21 diverse institutions representing minority-serving institutions, community colleges, research universities and large liberal arts colleges is participating in a yearlong pilot program that will help shape the framework, indicators and application process for the sustainability classification.

CU Boulder will refine the framework based on feedback gathered through the pilot phase and will emphasize a number of key factors in developing a formal approach to the framework, including:

Inclusive and accessible methodology
Sustainability as an active area of rigorous academic inquiry
Career development and workforce preparation
Ecosystem model and climate action
Complementary to existing sustainability frameworks, such as AASHE’S STARS certifications and the UN Sustainable Development Goals

The official application process for the elective classification is expected to launch in February 2026.

“We are excited for the ways in which this new classification will recognize the great efforts colleges and universities are making to ensure a sustainable future,” said Ted Mitchell, president of ACE, a membership organization that represents all sectors of colleges and universities in the United States. “And we are thrilled for the ways in which it inspires colleges and universities to push their efforts even further.”

CU Boulder’s status as a leader in sustainability and climate research spans decades, and the university’s student body is highly engaged. The university is home to the first student-run Environmental Center, founded in 1970. CU Boulder was also the first school to achieve a Sustainability Tracking, Assessment and Rating System (STARS) Gold rating from the Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education (AASHE). And CU Boulder’s athletics department is also active, with the first major college football stadium to launch a zero-waste program.

More recently, CU Boulder updated its Climate Action Plan, committing to a 50% reduction in emissions by 2030 and carbon neutrality by no later than 2050. In July, the university announced a new pouring rights deal with Pepsi that eliminates single-use beverage plastics on campus. And in August, CU Boulder announced the launch of the Buckley Center for Sustainability Education, made possible by a $10 million gift from alumnus Spike Buckley.
