Foreign Language and Area Studies (FLAS) Fellowships - Funding Available!

The Center for Asian Studies (CAS) is offering fellowships to all CU-Boulder students and MSU Denver undergraduates for summer 2026.

�� FLAS

Foreign Language and Area Studies (FLAS) Fellowships administered by CAS will be awarded competitively to students studying modern Asian languages. The U.S. Department of Education (ED) funds and oversees these awards, under the provisions of Title VI of the Higher Education Act.

As of fall semester 2025, CAS has been notified that this program is being discontinued and summer 2026 will be the final award period for the time being. We have significant funding remaining that must be used this summer, so we hope to be able to support a large number of students.

Tuesday, January 13, 2026, from 11:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., on Zoom

Application deadline

Sunday, February 15, 2026, at 11:59 p.m. MST.

Eligible Languages

All modern Asia languages offered on the CU-Boulder campus; additional Asian languages can be considered for summer awards pending additional approval.

Japanese
Korean
Tibetan*

* Additional approval required after selection; consult with CAS for information.

Award Benefits

Tuition: FLAS will cover up to $5,000 of tuition and fees.
Stipend: FLAS will provide a stipend of $3,500.

Optional Travel Award

Awards up to $1000 or actual cost of travel, whichever is lower, may be made in addition to FLAS Fellowship.
Pre-approval and compliance with the Fly America Act is required for international travel.

Note that two letters of recommendation are required with the application, so we highly recommend that students look at the application information and request letters as soon as possible.

We’re excited to launch a new “Where Are They Now?” feature, highlighting IAFS alumni and the paths they’ve taken since graduation. Each feature shares updates on career, accomplishments, and personal milestones, giving the IAFS community a chance to celebrate and stay connected with our graduates. If you’d like to share your own story, feel free to send us your answers to the questions below - we’d love to hear from you!

To kick off this new feature, we’re highlighting Marian Ware (IAFS ’12, Humanities, French Minor), who shares how her IAFS experiences shaped her career, recent accomplishments, and a fun glimpse into life after CU. Here’s what she had to say:

What are you up to now (role, organization, location)?
I am working as a program evaluator at a data-focused consulting firm called January Advisors. We partner with nonprofits, foundations, and local government bodies to enhance the effectiveness of their social impact programming. I really enjoy working with organizations to better leverage data to achieve their mission!
How has your IAFS background shaped your path?
Studying international affairs, studying abroad, and then living in the Middle East for several years really deepened my ability to work with folks from all backgrounds, and appreciation for diverse perspectives and lived experiences. International travel (especially getting out of your comfort zone) can really expand your worldview and empathy like nothing else I've experienced.
A recent accomplishment or moment you’re proud of?
After losing my USAID-funded job earlier this year, I managed to leverage my experience at an international civic engagement non-profit to shift into U.S.-focused social impact consulting. It was a huge transition and shift in my career path, but it's really meaningful work and I've found that my cross-cultural skills are still extremely valuable.
One fun fact about life after CU?
Despite Boulder being a huge hub for rock climbing, I didn't start climbing until I moved to Amman, Jordan! There's an amazing and passionate rock climbing community out there, and I'd advise any other rock climbers to go check it out.

Scott Renner (IAFS '86, Law '93) currently serves as the Chargé d’Affaires at the U.S. Embassy in Kingston, Jamaica. We asked Scott if he would be willing to share about his experiences in Jamaica in the aftermath of Hurricane Melissa. His reflection highlights both the severe challenges facing communities, the remarkable resilience of the Jamaican people, and the generosity of those involved in the relief efforts.

"Over the past few weeks in Jamaica, I’ve had the privilege of seeing both the profound challenges left by Hurricane Melissa and the extraordinary resilience of the Jamaican people. It has been so meaningful to witness the relief effort up close—from watching U.S. and Jamaican teams unload nearly 800,000 pounds of food, water, shelter, and medical supplies for hard-hit communities, to seeing families receive the hygiene kits, tarps, and shelter-fixing materials that arrived on recent flights from Miami. Moments like these remind me why I entered public service in the first place. The partnership between our countries, the dedication of first responders, and the spirit of the Jamaican people have been nothing short of inspiring. The effort has been not only a U.S. government effort, but I have also been equally impressed by the generosity exhibited by American private citizens, NGOs and private companies all pulling together to help the Jamaican people. This experience has given me a new sense of purpose as I continue my work as Charge d’Affaires at the U.S. Embassy in Kingston, and a sense of pride in the public and private American efforts working towards recovery.
